Alain-René le Sage, Sarzeau 8 mai 1668 - Boulogne 17 novembre 1747. The first edition of 'Le diable boiteux' was printed in 1707. In this book the devil raises the rooftops of the houses of Madrid to reveal the usually sordid realities hidden within. The described adventures are framed by rather stern moral expectations. For ultimately the author's ethical touchstones turn out to be almost puritanical: hard work, speaking the truth, and honest dealing (...)'.
