'Comte de Constantin-Francois Chasseboeuf was a French philosopher, abolitionst, writer, orientalist, politican and historian, Craon 1757 - Parijs 1820. After studies in Algiers he was noticed in the Paris salons by a treatise 'Sur la chronologie d'Herodote' (1781). In 1783 he travelled trough the Near East. This resulted in a Herodotian travelbook Le voyage en Égypte et en Syrie (1787, 2 volumes). In 1789 Volney was presented a mandate as a representative of the third estate in the Estated General. Since then he combined intensive political activity with a sucesfull career as a essayist. In particular his Lockian essay 'Les ruines ou méditations sur les révolutions des empires (1791) was very popular. In 1793 he published a kind of philosophical catechismt: La loi naturelle ou principes de la morale, déduits de l'organisation de l'homme et de de l'universe. In 1795 he travelled to America.
