Ex bibliotheca J.W. Six. 'Pontus Heuterus, Delft 1535 - Sint Truiden 1602 was the natural son of a bailiff from Delft. He was ordained as a priest. In 1572 he was prisoned by the 'Watergeuzen' but he just escaped the death by tortering. He fled to the South and became priest in Jabbeke. About 1578 he returned to the North to avoid Flemish calvinists. At the end of 1582 he moved to Burgundy and Franche-Comté for historical researches. Accordingly he worked for 2 years in Friesland and Groningen. In 1587 he became canon in Deventer. Here he had to fly for the protestants. Afterwards he moved definitely to the South, where he got ecclesiastical benefices. Next to his historical work he wrote a book about the Dutch language'. Haitsma-Mulier, 223
